What to see and do in Maçanet de la Selva

Maçanet de la Selva
Village
Maçanet de la Selva is a municipality of 8,071 inhabitants situated at 100 metres above sea level, in the Selva comarca, crossed by the AP-7 motorway and by the Barcelona-Portbou railway line. In its municipal area lithic remains from the Palaeolithic have been found on several hills, including the Cal Coix site, from the late Aurignacian, and a Solutrean blade from between 17,000 and 15,000 years ago; from the Neolithic come flint pieces and polished axes. From the Iberian period the settlement of Montbarbat is preserved, of 5,700 m² and dated between the 4th and 2nd centuries BC. The locality appears documented as Mazanedo on 11 August 919, and in 1001 Count Ramon Borrell confirmed its unified territory.
Tower of Cartellà
Monument
The Torre or Força de Cartellà is a fortified farmhouse situated at the foot of the old Nacional II road, in the municipality of Maçanet de la Selva, on the boundary with Vidreras. It is already mentioned in 1079 under the name Torre Fellona, and in 1160 Count Ramon Berenguer III granted it to Viscount Guerau II de Cabrera; the Cartellà family settled in Maçanet in 1159, and the tower remained in the family until 1865, when it was sold at auction. The building, of complex and irregular plan, has a three-storey façade, and at one corner stands the round, battlemented defence tower, four storeys high. Inside, the chapel of Santiago is preserved, with a Renaissance façade of 1510, bearing the Cartellà-Sarriera coat of arms. Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection) (BCIN 1007-MH).
Sant Llorenç de Maçanet
Monument
Romanesque church located in the centre of Maçanet de la Selva, built between 1040 and 1070 through the effort of the local people and the financial contribution of the bishop, and dedicated to Sant Llorenç. It has two naves -the main one and a lateral one to the south- ending in an apse and an apsidiole decorated with arcading between pilaster strips and a series of arrow-slits in the raised drum section; above the nave there is a loft that was used for defence when the temple was turned into a fortress. Between the 14th and 16th centuries chapels and outbuildings were added to it, among them the 17th-century sacristy. In 1936 it was looted and burned, losing the altarpiece that had been raised with donations from parishioners; today it houses the Gothic alabaster image of the Mare de Déu de Cabrera, which is venerated there.
Castle of Torcafaló
Monument
Torcafaló (Torcafelló) castle, on the Turó de Sant Jordi at 181 m, was built around 1080 and is documented since 1106 as a territorial frontier under the county of Girona; today the chapel of Sant Jordi occupies the old keep, within a complex restored between 1985 and 1992. An Asset of National Cultural Interest (BCIN 1006-MH).
Marata Tower
Monument
The Torre de Marata, a fortified and walled manor house in Gothic style from the 15th century in the Marata neighbourhood, in Maçanet de la Selva, takes its name from Ramon de Marata, married to Alemanda de Cartellà, whose family is documented since 1287; in 1462 the lord was Francí Miquel, a feudatory of the bishop of Girona, Margarit. Square in plan, with a large elongated defence tower with rounded corners, it preserves three large twin Gothic windows, a main doorway with a double round arch of small voussoirs, and a chapel dedicated to Saint Anne, from 1594. Lightning destroyed part of the tower in 1880 and a fire ravaged the upper floor in 1923. Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) since 1988, it is today in good condition but privately owned, so the interior cannot be visited.
