What to see and do in Campdevànol

Campdevànol
Village
Campdevànol, formerly called Sant Cristòfol de Campdevànol, is a municipality in the Ripollès district north of Ripoll, on the right bank of the Freser river and its tributary the Merdàs, with 3,241 inhabitants (2025) and an altitude of 738 metres. It absorbed the former independent municipalities of Sant Quintí de Puigrodon, between 1842 and 1857, and of Sant Llorenç in 1900, which in turn included Armàncies and Sant Pere d'Aüira. Its name is said to recall a camp the Vandals set up near the village in the 4th century. The economy traditionally relied on the metalworking and textile industries. It preserves the hermitages of Sant Martí and Sant Pere d'Aüira, and holds its main festival, known as 'La Gala', on the third Sunday of September, with the traditional Dansa de Campdevànol.
Sant Llorenç de Campdevànol
Monument
A parish already independent in 1075 and belonging to the monastery of Ripoll, registered since then in the Bishopric of Vic and documented in the 11th and 12th centuries as Sant Llorenç de Campo Avandali or Vanalo, located on the left bank of the river Merdàs, near the road to Gombrèn (Campdevànol). Of the original Romanesque church only the bell tower survives, two storeys high with blind arcading and lesenes; the church suffered serious destruction in the 17th century and was rebuilt in 1674, with chapels, a sacristy and a pointed-arch roof, the apse having been removed. During the Civil War part of the rectory and the church burned, with the roof and the west and north walls destroyed. In 1990 the Bishopric of Vic transferred the church to the Capdevila family, who completed the bell tower with its Lombard arcading.
Mas dit el Castell
Monument
A rectangular-plan farmhouse with one upper floor and an attached hayloft, with a two-sided roof, whose name refers to a castle for which no structure has ever been documented; declared an asset of national cultural interest. The roof ridge runs parallel to the main façade, and the entrance door is preceded by a stone stairway with metal railings; all openings are lintelled. Beside the farmhouse survives a group of small outbuildings that served as a henhouse, garage and storeroom.
Grats
Monument
Name of a former quadra, or territorial division, of Campdevànol, at the head of the Grats stream, a tributary of the Merdàs, where there once stood a castle, probably on the summit of the Eruga mountain; a farmhouse in the municipality still bears the name Grats. The castle is documented in 904, in a trial presided over by Count Miró of Cerdanya-Besalú, in which the proxy of Abbess Emma of Sant Joan de les Abadesses claimed lands that included it. Between 1050 and 1068, Bernat, viscount of Cerdanya, swore fealty to Count Ramon for the castles of Grats and Ribes. Having lost its status as a castle, it came to depend as a quadra on the castle of Blancafort, in the Gombrèn valley; in 1370 the Figuera and Grats farmhouses were in the hands of the lord of Solanllong, under the barons of Mataplana.
