What to see and do in Vilamacolum

Vilamacolum
Village
Vilamacolum is a municipality of the Alt Empordà, in the province of Girona, situated on flat ground on the left bank of the river Fluvià, spread out with no defined urban plan among fields of cereals, maize and apple trees. Known since the year 974, it belonged to the county of Empúries, and both Sant Pere de Rodes and Sant Esteve de Banyoles had possessions within its territory. Its main monument is the parish church of Santa Maria, with a single nave and semicircular apse, of Romanesque structure from the 11th to the 13th centuries, with a bell-gable and a portal from the 17th-18th centuries. It was the adoptive village of the writer Maria Àngels Anglada, who lived and died here and described it in novels such as Les Closes, which today gives rise to a literary route through the area. It has 406 inhabitants.
Fortified church of Santa Maria de Vilamacolum
Monument
Fortified Romanesque church, documented since 1094, on the outskirts of Vilamacolum, on the road toward Sant Pere Pescador, and declared a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection). With a single nave and semicircular apse, it was built in two stages: the chancel and a short stretch of the nave, from the 11th century, and the rest of the walls, from the 12th and 13th centuries, a period in which two side chapels were added and the building was fortified with walls that doubled the height of the original Romanesque ones, a reform that testifies to the medieval insecurity of the Empordà plain. On the façade, remodelled in the 17th and 18th centuries, the Romanesque arch of the earlier portal is preserved, and a bell-gable rises above it. In the apse, the oldest part, a window opens beneath a quarter-sphere vault.
