Fortià
Village
Fortià is a quiet village on the Empordà plain, in the Alt Empordà, located at the confluence of the Fluvià and Muga rivers, with 793 inhabitants (INE 2025) who live from agriculture and pig farms, although many commute daily to nearby Figueres for work. It belonged to the monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes throughout the Middle Ages until the 18th century: behind the parish church stands the Casa del Delme, where the monks collected their dues. The village suffered a major flood in 1421 that destroyed much of the population. In its old quarter, notable buildings include the late Gothic parish church of Sant Julià i Santa Basilissa, the Casa Gran, known as that of Queen Sibil·la, and the old Granja Escola (school farm), another witness to its past.
