Siurana
Village
Siurana, also called Siurana d'Empordà to distinguish it from its namesake in Prades, is a small settlement in the Alt Empordà situated between the Fluvià and Muga rivers, with cobbled streets climbing to the church of Santa Coloma, atop the hill. Documented since the year 939 as part of the county of Empúries, it retained a castle, mentioned from 1231 as the centre of an extensive batllia, of which today only wall remains and the base of a circular tower survive; between 1287 and 1295 it served as a prison for the sons of the future king of Sicily Charles II the Lame. The barony passed through several noble families until its inhabitants bought the jurisdiction from the crown in 1551. Nearby is the Salt de la Reina viewpoint, over the Siurana reservoir.
