Vilamalla
Village
Vilamalla is a village of 1,205 inhabitants (INE 2025) in the centre of the Alt Empordà plain, province of Girona, between the Manol and Fluvià rivers. Documented since the year 974 as Villa Dalmalia, it was a possession of the monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes and of the county of Empúries, a link recalled by its coat of arms, with the keys of Saint Peter and two wheels. Its closeness to Figueres favoured the industrial estates that today form the basis of its economy, although a minor cultivation of wheat and irrigated vegetables is kept up. The village, orderly and well-planted with gardens, is arranged around the Romanesque church of Sant Vicenç, from the 11th-12th centuries, with its curious bell-gable, and retains the Batllia farmhouse, from the 16th-17th centuries. Several paths connect it with the Aiguamolls de l'Empordà.
