What to see and do in Boadella i les Escaules

Boadella d'Empordà
Village
Boadella d'Empordà is the capital of the municipality of Boadella i les Escaules, in the middle valley of the Muga river, in the Alt Empordà, province of Girona, at 82 metres above sea level and with a territory of 10.76 km², which brings together the villages of Boadella and Les Escaules. The municipality's name has changed several times: Boadilla, Buadella from 1857, Boadella d'Empordà from 1984, and its current name since 2004. It retains the Gothic manor house of the castle-palace facing the main square, and very close by, the Darnius-Boadella reservoir as a leisure area. In 2025 the municipality has 262 inhabitants.
Les Escaules
Village
A former independent municipality until 1846, when it was joined to Boadella, with which it has formed the municipality of Boadella i les Escaules since 2004. The village retains a castle documented since 1123, of which remains survive today together with those of a former monastery, and the Romanesque church of Sant Martí. It lies close to the right bank of the Muga river, on a hill, in a very quiet rural setting where the waterfall and pools of la Caula stand out. Its territory also has natural caves inhabited in prehistoric times, with remains up to 60,000 years old. It had 98 inhabitants in 2025.
Castle-palace of Boadella
Monument
The castle-palace of Boadella, from the 15th century, stands next to the church of Santa Cecília, facing the plaza de la Constitución, in the old quarter of the village, in the municipality of Boadella i les Escaules. A plaque above the large portal of its main façade bears the inscription "BN DE VILAMARI ME FECIT ANNO DNI MCCCCLVIII", dating the work to 1458, commissioned by the corsair and admiral Bernat de Vilamarí. The building, irregular in plan, is arranged around a courtyard with three attached wings; on the western façade a two-light window with trefoil arches stands out, and inside the old great hall is preserved, with large pointed diaphragm arches. Declared Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection), it belonged to the monastery of Sant Martí de les Escaules and, later, to that of Sant Pere de Rodes.
Castle of les Escaules
Monument
A 14th–15th-century fortification that once guarded the border between the former counties of Empúries and Besalú, well preserved atop the hill overlooking the village of les Escaules.
