Castle of Sant Llorenç de la Muga Monument · Sant Llorenç de la Muga, Alt Empordà, Girona Remains of a 13th-century medieval castle next to the walled quarter of the village. Documented since 1210, when Arnau de Llers bequeathed it to his son Bernat, who in 1225 sold it to King James I together with the castle of Bassegoda and the nearby mines. It later passed to the Rocabertí family and played a defensive role during the 15th-century Catalan civil war: in 1475 it was taken by Rodrigo Trayguero with French troops. Only the keep survives, square in plan and about ten metres high, with loopholes, walls of cobblestones and mortar with ashlar at the corners and an interior barrel vault, along with stretches of wall and a semicircular bastion on the north side.
