Castle of Palau-saverdera Monument · Palau-saverdera, Alt Empordà, Girona Remains of the medieval castle that gives its name to the village, located at the foot of the sierra de Rodes, in the old quarter of Palau-saverdera, between the plaza Mayor and the calle Puigmal. Built in the 15th century by the Vilamarí family on top of an earlier fortification, it preserves three of the four corner towers that delimited the walled enclosure; the most notable is the Tower of the Hours, about 14 metres high and 4.5 wide, built of granite and slate. In 1462 it sheltered the local population during the siege of the Catalan civil war. It is declared Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection).
