What to see and do in Vilabertran

Vilabertran
Village
Vilabertran is a village of the Alt Empordà, in the province of Girona, 45 km from the capital, situated on the Empordà plain between the Manol and Muga rivers, with barely 2.29 km² of territory. It was born in the year 975 around a small church that soon took in a group of monks led by Abbot Pere Rigau; after a donation of land in 1069 the monastery of Santa Maria de Vilabertran was founded, under the rule of Saint Augustine, which gained great prestige in the 11th century thanks to the protection of the Rocabertí, viscounts of Peralada. It was a collegiate church from 1592 until Mendizábal's disentailment in 1835. The village, presided over by this Romanesque collegiate church, one of the best-preserved medieval monastic complexes in Catalonia, hosts the Schubertíada classical-music festival every summer.
Canonry of Santa Maria de Vilabertran
Monument
Augustinian monastic complex of Vilabertran, in the Alt Empordà, founded around 1060 by Pere Rigald; a donation of land in 1069 laid the foundations of the monastery, and the church was consecrated in 1100. It is one of the finest examples of a Romanesque canonry complex in Catalonia, with a basilical plan of three naves, three semicircular apses and a three-storey bell tower with twin windows. The cloister, trapezoidal in plan, is enclosed by arcaded galleries of eight round arches per side, and the abbot's palace, from the 15th century, adds a round-arched portal and trefoil Gothic windows. In 1295 it hosted the wedding of King James II of Aragon to Blanca de Nápoles. Declared Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection) in 1930, it today belongs to the Museu d'Història de Catalunya.
