Biure
Village
Biure is a small mountain village in the comarca of the Alt Empordà, in the province of Girona, with 226 inhabitants (INE 2025), situated beside the Ricardell river, above which it preserves the remains of a medieval castle on a nearby hill. Its terrain is uneven, more mountainous to the west, in the transition between the first pre-Pyrenean ranges and the Empordà plain, and the village stands at 122 metres above sea level. In its surroundings one can walk among dry-stone huts surrounded by vineyards. The municipality's coat of arms recalls, with a donkey, the past when these animals carried gypsum from one side of the mountains to the other, while the wavy band represents the Ricardell river itself and the three pebbles allude to the martyrdom of San Esteban, patron saint of the town.
