Vilanova del Vallès
Village
Vilanova del Vallès is a municipality in the Vallès Oriental, at 91 meters above sea level, situated in the valley of the Mogent River, next to the Prelitoral mountain range and its Céllecs hills, which rise above 500 meters. Sant Esteve de Vilanova is already mentioned in documents from 993 kept in the archive of Barcelona Cathedral, and a 1359 census ordered by Peter III recorded 68 households; the village was known as Vilanova de la Roca before being annexed in 1857 to La Roca del Vallès. It regained its municipal independence by decree of the Generalitat on 6 December 1983, separating from La Roca del Vallès and Montornès del Vallès. It now has 5,693 inhabitants, compared with the 448 it had in the mid-19th century.
