What to see and do in Castellbisbal

Castellbisbal
Village
Castellbisbal is a municipality in Vallès Occidental, in the province of Barcelona, situated on the lower course of the river Llobregat, at its confluence with the Rubí stream. The earliest signs of population date from the year 2000 BC, and in 1953 a landslide uncovered skeletons and pottery from that period, now displayed at the municipal museum of Molins de Rei. From Roman times two sites survive, one a cremation site on the Salzes stream and the other a burial site near the confluence with the Llobregat, along with the remains of a quarry and stretches of the old Via Augusta, which ran alongside the river and crossed it via the Devil's Bridge. The municipality preserves the Roman arch giving access to the bridge and its castle, evidence of this past as a crossroads.
Roman Access Arch to the Bridge of Castellbisbal
Monument
The Roman arch marking the approach to the Pont del Diable of Martorell is preserved on the left bank of the Llobregat river, already within the municipality of Castellbisbal. It was the monumental approach to a bridge built around 10 BC as part of the Via Augusta, 130 meters long, designed for the passage of ox carts. The arch, triumphal and honorific, probably from the 2nd century, preserves inscriptions of the legions that worked on its construction -the IV Macedonica, the VI Victrix and the X Gemina-, which allow it to be dated to around 9-8 BC. The bridge it gave access to was rebuilt in Gothic style from 1283, restored in 1768, destroyed in the Civil War in 1939, and rebuilt in the 1950s keeping its medieval appearance.
Castle of Castellbisbal
Monument
The Castell de Castellbisbal (Vallès Occidental, Barcelona), from which the municipality takes its name, is a medieval castle now very ruined: only a few foundation walls survive around the chapel of Sant Vicenç, on the hill of Garses. It is documented from 1013 as an episcopal stronghold under Bishop Guislabert, and around 1044 it was pledged to the Count of Barcelona following a political conflict. The Castellbisbal family served as castellans during the 12th and 13th centuries; Berenguer de Castellbisbal rebuilt it in the early 14th century. After the Catalan civil war of 1462-1472 it passed to the Requesens family, which consolidated its ownership around 1494. It was declared Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) on 8 November 1988.
The Telegraph of Castellbisbal
Monument
El Telègraf, or Torre Fossada, is a tower of a former optical telegraph line in the municipality of Castellbisbal (Vallès Occidental), declared Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Spain's highest level of heritage protection). Situated above the crossing of the Llobregat river, next to the Pont del Diable, it has a square floor plan, about 5 meters on each side and 7 meters high, with two floors and a flat roof, and it was surrounded by a moat crossed by a platform with a drawbridge. It was built in the mid-19th century as part of the military optical telegraph line from Barcelona to Lleida, communicating with the towers of Molins de Rei and Esparreguera. On 24 January 1939 it was one of the last points of resistance of Republican troops against Franco's army; it was restored by the town council in the mid-1990s.
Llobregat River through Castellbisbal
Nature
The river Llobregat, as it passes through Castellbisbal (Vallès Occidental, Barcelona), marks the municipal boundary at its confluence with the riera de Rubí, at the outlet of the Vallès depression. The old Via Augusta ran along its bank, and downstream, between Castellbisbal and Martorell, the river is crossed by the historic Pont del Diable.
