What to see and do in Castellví de Rosanes

Castellví de Rosanes
Village
Castellví de Rosanes is a municipality in the Baix Llobregat comarca, in the province of Barcelona, located on the northern slope of the Ordal massif, next to the river Anoia. It has 2,171 inhabitants spread between the urban centre and the neighbourhoods of Els Àngels, Miralles, el Taió and the urbanisations of Can Sunyer del Palau and Valldaina. Its name comes from the Castell Vell de Rosanes, a fortress documented from the year 963 and the centre of the barony of Castellvell, whose domains came to include Abrera, Martorell and other neighbouring municipalities. The castle was destroyed in 1714 by Philippist troops during the War of the Spanish Succession and was never rebuilt. The municipality also preserves the old convent of Miralles.
Old Castle of Rosanes
Monument
Documented since 963 as “Castrum Vetulo,” head of the Barony of Castellvell between the 11th-14th centuries, it passed to the Montcada family in 1228 and to the Foix family in the 14th century; Joan I d'Empúries was held prisoner there in 1396. It stands at 369 metres of altitude, dominating the passage through the corridor of the Penedès depression and the course of the Llobregat on its way to Barcelona. The oldest enclosure surrounds a massive circular Roman tower, with large squared ashlars and extremely hard mortar; a second, already Gothic enclosure occupied the ground of the former settlement. It was blown up on 23 January 1714 with about 21 kg of gunpowder during the Bourbon siege. It preserves ruins of walls and towers and, at the foot of the castle, a Romanesque chapel of Sant Jaume, today abandoned. Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (BCIN 669-MH, Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection).
Convent of Miralles
Monument
The Convent de Miralles, declared a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection), had as its first building a square-plan fortress of the 9th or 10th century built on a Roman base; on top of it a Gothic casal (manor house) was raised in the 13th and 14th centuries. It belonged in 1210 to Guerau Alemany de Cervelló and, at the end of that century, to Bernat de Miralles, who died in 1311; at the start of the 15th century it belonged to Guillem Codorniu, of Gelida. In 1410 the Barcelona merchant Bertran Nicolau founded an Augustinian monastery here, and in 1414 two friars from the Barcelona convent bought the Miralles estate (cuadra) and turned the old fortified casal into the Casa de Déu de Miralles, building and painting a chapel at that time. In the 18th century that chapel became too small and the current main church was built.
