What to see and do in el Papiol

El Papiol
Village
El Papiol is a municipality in the Baix Llobregat district, in the province of Barcelona, located among the last foothills of the Collserola mountains, the river Llobregat and the Rubí stream; a large part of its territory forms part of the Collserola park, whose highest point is Puig Madrona, at 336 metres. It has 4,404 inhabitants. The village grew up on a 160-metre hill around the castle, documented since 1115 and the historic seat of the barony of El Papiol, still held by its descendants. It also preserves the parish church of Santa Eulalia, the pre-Romanesque hermitage of la Salut, and the Casa de Pedra. Its most notable festivals are the Cherry Festival and the summer main festival.
Castle of el Papiol
Monument
The castle of El Papiol stands on the bank of the Llobregat river and originally served to protect the course of the river and the road to Barcelona from incursions coming from Al-Andalus, within the system of fortifications built around the comital city. It is documented since 1115, when the counts of Barcelona Ramón Berenguer III and Dulce of Provence granted it to the Pere brothers, who took the surname Despapiol because of it. The barony later passed through several families, including the Guimerà and the Marimón, and in the 18th century was acquired by Gerardo Cebrià Font. Its current owners, descendants of the barony, undertook a restoration advised by Martí de Riquer, and every summer the castle hosts a music festival and other cultural activities.
