What to see and do in Palafolls

Palafolls
Village
Palafolls is a municipality in the northern Maresme, in the province of Barcelona, with 10,038 inhabitants (INE 2025), made up of several settlements among which Sant Genís de Palafolls and the centre of Les Ferreries stand out, where the church and town hall are concentrated. Atop the turó del Castell stands the termenat castle of Palafolls, today in ruins, which gives its name to the hill. The municipality borders the province of Girona to the north via the plain of the river Tordera. Among its contemporary buildings, the Enric Miralles Library stands out, the work of the EMBT studio led by the architect Enric Miralles himself together with Benedetta Tagliabue, named in his memory after his death during the construction of the building.
Castle of Palafolls
Monument
Palafolls Castle is documented from the year 968, when it is mentioned in the founding of the Benedictine monastery of San Pablo; the surviving remains date from the late 10th to the 14th century. It stands overlooking the lower course and the fertile plain of the Tordera river, at a strategic point on the royal road from Girona to Barcelona along the coast. It belonged successively to the Palafolls family, to Bernardo IV de Cabrera from 1382, to the Montcada family from 1572, and to the Medinaceli family from 1722. In the 16th century its coastal defences were reinforced against piracy, but it entered an irreversible decline during the 17th and 18th centuries. Today it survives in ruins, can be visited, and has been declared a Cultural Asset of Interest since 1988.
Tower of Valldejuli
Monument
A defence tower of the Can Valldejuli farmhouse, in the municipality of Palafolls, in the Maresme district, listed as a cultural asset of national interest. Documented from 1251, when it belonged to the Palafolls family, it passed in 1759 to the Torrent family through the marriage of the heiress (pubilla) Josepa Valldejuli, and in the 19th century an iron foundry was operated there. The tower, round in plan and three storeys high, retains machicolations, loopholes and stone-framed windows; in front of it stands a well, also of stone.
Parish Church of Sant Genís de Palafolls
Monument
The parish church of Palafolls, in the village of Sant Genís de Palafolls, in the Maresme district, declared a cultural asset of national interest. With a single nave covered by a barrel vault, to which another nave was added on the north side and a chapel on the south side, it retains on the exterior Lombard arcading and a circular Gothic-style defence tower; the flat apse, today converted into a sacristy, has a small window, and the main doorway, on the west side, dates from the 16th century. The parish is already mentioned in a decree of King Louis of France from the year 947, in favour of the monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes; the Romanesque church, from the 11th century, was consecrated in 1079 by the Bishop of Girona Berenguer Guifré, and restoration works began in 1502.
