Castle of Palafolls Monument · Palafolls, Maresme, Barcelona Palafolls Castle is documented from the year 968, when it is mentioned in the founding of the Benedictine monastery of San Pablo; the surviving remains date from the late 10th to the 14th century. It stands overlooking the lower course and the fertile plain of the Tordera river, at a strategic point on the royal road from Girona to Barcelona along the coast. It belonged successively to the Palafolls family, to Bernardo IV de Cabrera from 1382, to the Montcada family from 1572, and to the Medinaceli family from 1722. In the 16th century its coastal defences were reinforced against piracy, but it entered an irreversible decline during the 17th and 18th centuries. Today it survives in ruins, can be visited, and has been declared a Cultural Asset of Interest since 1988. Photo: Karsten11 (CC0) What to see and do in Palafolls
