What to see and do in la Quar

La Quar
Village
La Quar is a rural municipality in the Berguedà comarca, situated at its eastern end, on the border with the Llusanès and the Ripollès. Its historic centre, Santa María de la Quar, sits at the foot of the rocky mass on which the sanctuary stands, while the town hall has its seat in San Mauricio de la Quar. It has only 41 inhabitants (INE 2025), the result of a chronic depopulation that took it from 578 inhabitants in 1857 to little more than 40 today, owing to the lack of electricity, telephone and health services in its scattered farmsteads. It lives from dry-land farming. Its district preserves the Romanesque monastery of Sant Pere de la Portella and the castle of the same name, as well as the chapel of San Mauricio, from the 17th century.
Monastery of Sant Pere de la Portella
Monument
A Benedictine monastery set in a broad hollow at the head of the valley of la Portella, in the municipality of la Quar (Berguedà), declared a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional. Documented since 997 and formally founded in 1003 by the Saportella lineage, later protected by Abbot Oliba with numerous donations. It preserves in good condition the church, with a single nave and semicircular apse with Lombard decoration, consecrated in 1035 by Bishop Ermengol of Urgell. The bell tower is a square tower attached to the north wall, and to the south there is a small two-storey cloister, from the 15th century, around which the monastic quarters are arranged, today very deteriorated, next to the 18th-century abbatial palace (1775). The Romanesque carving of the Majestat de la Portella, from the 12th century, was destroyed in 1936.
Castle of la Portella
Monument
Of the castle of la Portella, in the municipality of la Quar, neither the exact location nor its former appearance is known: it stood near the monastery of Sant Pere de la Portella, and the place was also known as Frontanyà. It already existed in the 10th century, when it was the possession of Count Oliba Cabreta, who, on entering the monastery of Ripoll, left it to his brother Bernat Tallaferro, incorporating it into his county of Besalú. It was governed by vicars surnamed Portella, who were the ones who founded a monastery near the castle. From the 15th century onward, reports of it grow ever scarcer, until they disappear completely.
