What to see and do in Borredà

Borredà
Village
Borredà is a municipality in the south-east of the Berguedà, in the province of Barcelona, straddling the Ripollès and Osona, surrounded by pine and beech woods. It has 433 inhabitants, and its economy combines dryland farming, livestock raising, the textile industry, forestry and rural tourism. The parish church of Santa María, one of its oldest buildings, dates from the year 856; next to it stands the Romanesque church of Sant Sadurní de Rotgers. Josep Manso i Solà, a hero of the Peninsular War, was born in Borredà in 1785. The village maintains an intense associative life, with giant-carrying troupes led by the rooster Radulf, its symbol, and holds its main festival on the second-to-last weekend of August, along with a rooster fair.
Church of Sant Sadurní de Rotgers
Monument
The church, consecrated in 1167, a former rural parish and later a chapel of ease of Santa Maria de Borredà, stands at 976 metres above sea level on a small ridge, in a wooded and depopulated area that is difficult to access, within the property of the Torrents farmhouse. It is a single-nave building with a semicircular apse decorated with blind arcading and Lombard bands, joined irregularly to the nave because it corresponds to two building phases, since the nave and bell tower were rebuilt in the early 13th century; it has ties with the church of Sant Andreu de Llanars, in Osona. Archaeological remains found to the west may correspond to the residence of a certain Rodegari, who gave the place its name. The altar frontal dedicated to Sant Sadurní is today kept in the Museu Episcopal de Vic. Abandoned in the last medieval centuries, no building work is documented there until the end of the 16th century.
