Castle of Castellar Monument · Castellar de n'Hug, Berguedà, Barcelona The castle of Castellar de n'Hug is a frontier castle that gives its name to the municipality (Berguedà), declared a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection); together with its street it forms the original core of the settlement. Documented since the year 938, with mentions as early as the 10th century, its founding charter dates from 1292; in 1326 Arnau de Saga is recorded as its lord, and during the 17th century it was the residence of the Duke of Alba. Only a few remains of walls survive, today used as a shed, of rectangular plan and exposed, undressed ashlar laid in courses and bound with mortar; traces of former openings, now blocked up, can be seen. The building has been considerably altered and is today used as an occasional dwelling. Photo: Josep Renalias (CC BY-SA 3.0) What to see and do in Castellar de n'Hug
