Old Castle of Rosanes Monument · Castellví de Rosanes, Baix Llobregat, Barcelona Documented since 963 as “Castrum Vetulo,” head of the Barony of Castellvell between the 11th-14th centuries, it passed to the Montcada family in 1228 and to the Foix family in the 14th century; Joan I d'Empúries was held prisoner there in 1396. It stands at 369 metres of altitude, dominating the passage through the corridor of the Penedès depression and the course of the Llobregat on its way to Barcelona. The oldest enclosure surrounds a massive circular Roman tower, with large squared ashlars and extremely hard mortar; a second, already Gothic enclosure occupied the ground of the former settlement. It was blown up on 23 January 1714 with about 21 kg of gunpowder during the Bourbon siege. It preserves ruins of walls and towers and, at the foot of the castle, a Romanesque chapel of Sant Jaume, today abandoned.
