Park of el Foix Nature · Castellet i la Gornal, Alt Penedès, Barcelona The Parc del Foix covers some 3,157 hectares in the foothills of the Massís del Garraf, between the comarques of Alt Penedès, Baix Penedès and Garraf, equidistant from Vilanova i la Geltrú, El Vendrell and Vilafranca del Penedès. Managed by the Consorci del Parc del Foix, its central feature is the Foix reservoir, built on the river of the same name and in service since 1928, one of the few wetlands in the Penedès; its waters are not fit for human consumption owing to discharges from Vilafranca's wastewater treatment plant. The landscape combines holm-oak woods and Aleppo pine forests with riverside vegetation of ash and poplar trees, and it is a refuge for wildlife such as the Bonelli's eagle, alongside historic castles such as that of Castellet, documented since the year 977.
