What to see and do in Porto

Porto
Village
Porto is the highest municipality and the one farthest from the capital in the whole province of Zamora: it lies at an average altitude of 1211 metres and 175 kilometres from Zamora, in a deep valley north of the Bibey river, within Alta Sanabria. Its 200 km² of municipal territory, made rugged by the Porto and Segundera mountain ranges — with peaks over 2000 metres, such as the Moncalvo, at 2044 — lie within the Lago de Sanabria natural park, the largest lake of glacial origin on the Iberian Peninsula. Its 147 residents, on the boundary with the provinces of León and Orense, also speak portexo, a local variant of eastern Galician.
The church of the Asunción in Porto
Monument
Raised between the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, it presides over the most isolated village in Sanabria, surrounded by medieval bread ovens, old flour mills, looms, bridges and fountains of traditional architecture.
The lagoons of the Sierra Segundera
Nature
The Sierra Segundera, in the León mountains of the Galician-Leonese massif, preserves the largest group of glacial lakes in Spain after the Pyrenees, together with one of the best-preserved groups of peat bogs on the peninsula, a legacy of the ice field that covered these mountains during the Quaternary glaciations. It marks the boundary between the Sil and Esla basins and gathers peaks over 2,000 metres, such as Peña Trevinca and Moncalvo. The district holds a string of lakes — Los Cancelos, the Lagoas de Verea and de Piatorta, the one at Lacillo at 1,695 metres, and the one at los Peces — amid oak groves, birches, willows, hollies and yews, in a landscape of harsh, snowy winters and short summers, home to roe deer, wild boar, otter, badger, polecat and wolf.
The privilege granted by Alfonso IX to Porto
Historical milestone
Alfonso IX of León confirmed at Salamanca, in 1209, the charters of Porto; thirteen years later, in 1222, the same monarch handed the town over to the Order of Santiago together with the neighbouring settlement of Pías.
The livestock fairs of Porto
Activity
The fairs are held on the last Saturdays of the month from May to October, and the one on 26 August is the busiest; they remain the great livestock event of a municipality of only 147 inhabitants.
The referendum on joining Galicia
Curiosity
In 2018 the residents held an informal consultation on the possibility of joining Galicia, with which they gave voice to the administrative isolation of the most remote corner of the province of Zamora.
