What to see and do in Pías

Pías
Village
Pías is a bilingual municipality of the province of Zamora, with 91 inhabitants, in the Sanabria district, in the area known as Alta Sanabria or As Portelas, which also comprises the hamlets of Barjacoba and Villanueva de la Sierra. Its name is the Galician form of "pila", a hollow carved into the rock, and would allude to cavities cut by shepherds and goatherds for milking or storing milk, as in similar sites in Portugal and in Las Hurdes. The earliest references date from the twelfth century, cited as "Pilas" in 1154 and as "Pias" in 1198, within the Leonese repopulation process; in 1222 Alfonso IX of León granted Pías, together with neighbouring Porto, to the Order of Santiago, within the commandery of Castrotorafe. Remains survive of pre-Roman and Roman hillforts, walls and bridges.

Historical milestone
A document of 1154 cites the place as uno villar que uocitant Pilas and in 1198 it already appears written as Pias; in 1222 Alfonso IX of León handed Pías and neighbouring Porto to the Order of Santiago, under whose jurisdiction they remained.

Curiosity
With 91 inhabitants spread between Barjacoba, Villanueva de la Sierra and Pías itself, which keeps only eleven households, it is the least populated municipality in the comarca, at 1,063 metres of altitude and next to the Galician border.
