What to see and do in A Veiga

A Veiga
Village
A Veiga is a municipality in the province of Ourense, in the comarca of Valdeorras, with 873 inhabitants according to the 2025 register and an area of 291 square kilometres, the largest in the province. Pena Trevinca, at 2,127 metres, the roof of Galicia, rises here, and at 1,697 metres, in its massif, lies the Laguna de la Serpiente, of glacial origin, on which legend places, every Saint John's Eve, a princess who for the rest of the year is a serpent. The territory is divided into highlands, granite mid-elevation lands where most of the population centres sit, and lowlands beside the Jares river, whose Prada reservoir, built in 1958, flooded the village of Alberguería the following year.
Lagoon of a Serpe
Nature
A lake of glacial origin at 1,697 metres in the Pena Trevinca massif, near the hamlet of da Ponte, one of several icy basins scattered across these mountains, which local oral tradition links to legends of serpents. Legend has it that on the night of San Xoán a girl with long black hair appears sitting on its shores, waiting for some young man to dare to break the curse that forces her to remain turned into a serpent for the rest of the year.
Valley of the Xares River
Nature
The Xares and the Corzos carve the valleys that descend from the Trevinca massif to the Sil in the largest municipality in the province of Ourense, with 291 square kilometres of mountain and high wet meadows.
Ascent of Pena Trevinca
Activity
The climb to the roof of Galicia, the 2,127 metres of Pena Trevinca, on the boundary with Zamora and León; the route sets out from the high villages of the municipality and crosses glacial lakes, scree and mountain pasture.
Church of Santiago de Corzos
Monument
Parish church of the hamlet of Corzos, in the upper valley of the river of the same name; it is one of the thirty-one parishes of A Veiga, the concello that reaches the 2,127 metres of Pena Trevinca.
Lagoon of Ocelo
Nature
Lagoon of glacial origin of the Pena Trevinca massif, sister of the neighbouring Lagoa da Serpe; both occupy basins carved by the ice on the mountain roof of Galicia, above 1,600 metres.
The Moura's Pitcher
Curiosity
Stretch of the river Corzos where the water excavated giant potholes that form a labyrinth of rock with underground courses and falls; the name refers to the mouras of Galician mythology.
Green Trail of the Xares
Activity
Path approved as PR-G 211 that runs through the valley of the river Xares in A Veiga; it forms part of a network of routes of the concello that includes several ascent itineraries to Pena Trevinca.
A Veiga, a Galician tourist municipality
Historical milestone
The concello received that declaration for its natural heritage, headed by Pena Trevinca and the glacial lagoons; two years later it obtained the Agader prize for the embellishment of the rural environment.
Kid goat and pasture-raised meat from A Veiga
Food and drink
At the beginning of the 20th century the concello kept ten thousand head of cattle and sixty thousand of sheep and goats; from that mountain herd comes the tradition of roast kid and of pasture-raised meats.
