What to see and do in Villardeciervos

Villardeciervos
Village
Villardeciervos is a town in the comarca of La Carballeda, in the province of Zamora, set at the foot of the Sierra de la Culebra, which closes off its municipal area to the south amid dense reforested woodland, mostly conifers, along with native oak, Pyrenean oak and chestnut; to the north it is surrounded by the Agavanzal, Valparaíso and Cernadilla reservoirs. It has 383 inhabitants and its town centre, declared a historic site in 1987, includes the hamlet of Cional; notable there are the church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción and numerous two- and three-storey mansions in reddish stone, with jutting galleries and sun terraces. Its main festival is Corpus Christi, when the monstrance is carried out under a canopy accompanied by the town council, and it celebrates San Antón on 17 January.
The historic ensemble of Villardeciervos
Monument
Declared a BIC in the category of historic ensemble in 1987, the centre preserves mansions of two and three storeys raised in reddish ashlar and cobbled streets at the foot of the Sierra de la Culebra.
The church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción
Monument
It presides over the heart of the historic ensemble with its slender bell tower and preserves inside a nineteenth-century altarpiece; it is the parish church of a villa that in 2024 did not reach four hundred residents.
The wooden galleries of the manor houses
Curiosity
The seigneurial dwellings display wooden sun galleries and corridors projecting over the stone façade; local memory relates the size of these houses to the wealth brought by smuggling on the border with Portugal.
The Sierra de la Culebra from Villardeciervos
Nature
The village looks out over an area of some seventy thousand hectares, a national hunting reserve since 1973 and a regional one since 1996, with one of the greatest densities of Iberian wolf in all of western Europe.
The deer reintroduced in the mountains
Nature
The red deer was reintroduced in the Sierra de la Culebra in 1973, when the hunting reserve was created, over a woodland of Pyrenean oak, chestnut and plantation pine where wild boar and numerous birds of prey also live.
The first mention of Vilar de Cervos
Historical milestone
A document of 1155 records for the first time the name of Vilar de Cervos; in 1305 the monastery of Moreruela had enclosed the whole municipal district and in 1499 the Counts of Benavente obtained the collection of its rents.
The skirmish against the French cavalry
Historical milestone
Twenty-seven armed residents faced forty-two French cavalry soldiers during the intervention of 1823 and managed to drive them off; the episode is still alive in the memory of the villa.
The chestnuts of the Carballeda
Food and drink
The chestnut groves that surround the village give the fruit that, roasted or boiled, sustained the comarca's winter for centuries; with the goat cheeses it is still the greatest reference of the larder of Sanabria and the Carballeda.
