What to see and do in Figueruela de Arriba

Figueruela de Arriba
Village
Figueruela de Arriba, capital of a municipality that brings together seven villages —Figueruela de Abajo, Flechas, Gallegos del Campo, Moldones, Riomanzanas and Villarino de Manzanas—, is the most extensive district in Aliste, with almost 153 km² at 858 metres, next to the sierra de la Culebra and close to the Portuguese natural park of Montesinho. The banks of the Manzanas and Cabrón rivers form the area known as Jardín de Aliste, protected as a LIC (Lugar de Interés Comunitario, a protected-area status under the Natura 2000 network) and regional hunting reserve, the northern limit of Mediterranean species such as the cork oak and home to the area's largest population of Iberian wolf. With 310 inhabitants, it preserves rock art at the Canchal del Melendro and the hillfort of Riomanzanas, and on San Esteban's day the Carocho and the Obisparra go out in procession.
The church of Santa Irene
Monument
Of medieval structure with Romanesque elements, it distributes three naves beneath eight transverse arches; the main altarpiece, of the eighteenth century, keeps the image of Santa Irene, the patroness the village celebrates on 20 August.
The rock art of the Canchal del Melendro
Curiosity
The paintings of the Canchal del Melendro and of the Peña el Cuartillo, beside the castro of Riomanzanas, prove a very ancient human occupation of this municipal district, the largest in extent of the whole comarca of Aliste.
The Garden of Aliste
Nature
The rivers Manzanas and Cabrón form the spot known as the Jardín de Aliste, in a municipality of 152.85 square kilometres and barely 2.03 inhabitants per square kilometre pressed against the Portuguese border.
The heather honey of Figueruela
Food and drink
The heather moors that cover the sierra sustain a beekeeping from which comes a heather honey of great quality; with rye, wheat and pulses it formed the basis of an economy of pure subsistence.
The All Saints' Bonfire
Food and drink
On 1 November the village lights the Tizón, a communal bonfire on which chestnuts are roasted; it is the autumn occasion in a calendar that begins with the songs of the eve of Epiphany, on 5 January.
