What to see and do in Trabazos

Trabazos
Village
Trabazos is a municipality in the Zamora comarca of Aliste, next to the border with Portugal, made up, besides the eponymous town, of the hamlets of Latedo, Nuez, San Martín del Pedroso and Villarino tras la Sierra, with 848 inhabitants in total. The Manzanas river marks the line with Portugal, amid a landscape broken up by numerous streams, and the place name Trabazos may refer to a structure built of logs or timber, a tradition of which reminders still survive in the footbridges and bridges of the border area. Settlement in the district goes back to pre-Roman times, as attested by the remains of several hillforts, among them those of El Pedroso, Trabazos and los Fresnos in Nuez, also inhabited in Roman times according to the pottery found there. The Chalcolithic hillfort of El Pedroso, one of the area's most important fortified settlements, has been declared an archaeological zone, and on 8 May a pilgrimage (romería) is held at the hermitage of la Soledad.
The church of San Pelayo
Monument
The parish church stands out for its bell tower and heads a religious heritage spread across the five villages of the municipal district, among them the church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, in Nuez.
The hillfort of El Pedroso
Nature
An archaeological site corresponding to a fortified settlement of the late Prehistoric period, also known as the Castro de Peña la Marra, located on a hill beside the Manzanas River, facing the Portuguese border town of Quintanilha. Declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 2009, it preserves a dry-stone perimeter wall enclosing an area of about three hectares, with pottery remains and a circular structure in its western sector. The pottery found and intensive stone tool production —arrowheads, polished axes, hand mills— place its occupation between the late Neolithic and the early Bronze Age. On the southern slope of the hill, a cavity known as "Casa del Moro" preserves schematic rock engravings interpreted as a sanctuary linked to the settlement.
The pilgrimage of the hermitage of La Soledad
Activity
On 8 May the residents climb in pilgrimage to the hermitage of La Soledad, an occasion that brings together the five villages of the municipality: Trabazos, Nuez, San Martín del Pedroso, Villarino Tras la Sierra and Latedo.
