What to see and do in Mahíde

Mahíde
Village
Mahíde is a municipality in the comarca of Aliste, in western Zamora and near the border with Portugal, set in the sierra de la Culebra, home to one of the largest wolf populations in western Europe. Besides the town of Mahíde, it brings together the Alistano villages of Boya, Las Torres de Aliste, Pobladura de Aliste and San Pedro de las Herrerías, on a peneplain crossed by the Aliste river, with traditional mills on its banks. The climate has long, cold winters with frequent frosts, and short, hot summers. In its territory the Neolithic burial mound of Llama Redonda was catalogued, and in the town centre stands out the parish church of Santa María Egipciaca, from the 18th century, with a slender bell-gable. It has 299 inhabitants.

Monument
Built in the eighteenth century and crowned by a notable bell tower, it is dedicated to a dedication rarely found on the peninsula; it presides over a municipality spread across five hamlets of the Sierra de la Culebra.

Nature
This burial mound of the Neolithic or the Chalcolithic, together with the castro of El Castrico and a polished axe found in the municipal district, make up the oldest prehistoric record of this corner of Aliste.
The donation of Mahíde to the monastery
Historical milestone
The Portuguese king Afonso Henriques donated Mahíde to the monastery of San Martín de Castañeda in 1154 and the Leonese Fernando II confirmed the donation in 1167; in 1237 a fuero of its own for the place is already cited.
