What to see and do in Viñas

Viñas
Village
Viñas is a municipality in the comarca of Aliste, in western Zamora, near the border with Portugal and surrounded by the sierras of la Culebra and Tras-os-Montes; its 148 inhabitants are shared with the villages of Ribas, San Blas and Vega de Nuez. It preserves the Zoela hillfort of Llombo Latedo, popularly known as La Almena, with a trapezoidal-plan wall recognisable today by the earthen bank it forms; its ancient inhabitants belonged to the Zoela tribe, within the Astures people. In the district there is also a Roman site, the Castrico de La Verea, with no defensive structures. The present-day Viñas was founded or refounded in the Middle Ages, during the resettlement carried out by the kings of León in the 10th century using pre-existing hillforts.

Monument
It stands at the top of the village, over a group of houses of traditional Aliste architecture in which the hermitage of the Inmaculada, the slender Cruz del Campo and a stone fountain with recessed pilasters stand out.

Nature
Also called La Almena, this settlement of the Zoelae preserves the trapezoidal layout of its wall, visible by the slope and the stone flakes; nearby, the Castrico de La Verea yielded Roman ceramics and funerary stelae.

Curiosity
The geographical dictionaries of the middle of the nineteenth century counted in Viñas one hundred and ninety souls; today the municipality has 148 inhabitants shared among Viñas, Ribas, San Blas and Vega de Nuez, at 778 metres of altitude.
