Laguna de Duero
Village
Laguna de Duero is a city of almost 23,000 inhabitants in Valladolid, just 7 kilometres from the capital, beside the River Duero and surrounded by the pine forests of the Tierra de Pinares. Its name comes from a large saltwater lagoon of which only a small, remodelled portion survives today: the old salt pans were worked until 1972. The Canal del Duero, dating from 1879, also runs through the municipality, today a natural area frequented by birds. Predominantly industrial, it has the Las Lobas and Los Barreros industrial estates and the districts of Torrelago and El Villar. Its Gothic church of la Asunción was built in the 16th century, and the town celebrates in February the peculiar Día de la Vieja, almost unique to the province.
