What to see and do in Villanueva de Duero

Villanueva de Duero
Village
Villanueva de Duero is a municipality in the province of Valladolid with 1,263 inhabitants, situated on the left bank of the Duero, about 18 kilometres upstream from the provincial capital. It was first called Las Cabañuelas; in 1109 it became Aldea Nueva and later Aldeanueva de Aniago, for belonging to the territory of the Charterhouse of Nuestra Señora de Aniago, with which its history remained linked until their definitive separation in 1807, although it had already taken its present name in 1630. Remains of a 4th-century Roman settlement have been found there. It preserves the Mudéjar church of Nuestra Señora de la Visitación, from the 16th century, with three naves and a tower topped by an 18th-century spire, which houses a Reclining Christ from the workshop of Gregorio Fernández.
Church of Nuestra Señora de la Visitación
Monument
The church of Nuestra Señora de la Visitación is a 16th-century Mudéjar church built of brick, stone and rammed earth, with three naves separated by rectangular pillars and round arches; the central nave, taller and wider than the side ones, is covered by a shallow barrel vault. At the foot stands the tower, topped by an 18th-century slate spire. It houses a Recumbent Christ attributed to the workshop of Gregorio Fernández, a polychrome alabaster Pietà from the mid-15th century and carvings such as the Nazarene Christ and the Risen Christ, as well as sculptures of the town's patron saints, Saint Anthony of Padua and Saint Elizabeth. Beside it, the hermitage of the Cristo houses a polychrome 16th-century Saint Roch.
Charterhouse of Nuestra Señora de Aniago
Monument
The Charterhouse of Nuestra Señora de Aniago, in the municipal district of Villanueva de Duero (Valladolid), was founded in 1441, already in the 15th century, under the patronage of Queen Maria of Aragon, wife of John II, on the Aniago estate, then a small village with its own district belonging to Valladolid. The Carthusian monastery stood until its definitive suppression in 1836, following the 19th-century disentailment and the exclaustrations. Today Aniago is a depopulated place given over to the farming activities of its new owners, but it preserves almost intact the wall that surrounded the monastic complex and the settlers' dwellings, as well as ruined remains of the building, beside the river Duero; the surrounding land, which once formed the monks' enclosed estate, is still farmed today.

Nature
The municipality occupies 37.29 square kilometres on the left bank of the Duero, some eighteen kilometres upstream of Valladolid, just where the valley of the Adaja opens up and delivers its waters to the great river.
