What to see and do in Geria

Geria
Village
Geria is a village in the Campiña del Pisuerga, in the province of Valladolid, with 492 inhabitants, located near where the Pisuerga flows into the Duero, between the flat vega of the valley and the first páramos of the Montes Torozos. Its name is of Arabic origin: some derive it from “Yar'a”, the place where the waters flow, on account of that confluence of rivers; others from “djezair”, island or hamlet. That confluence was, since prehistory, a natural passageway for peoples and armies, and polished stone axes from the Neolithic and remains of a Vaccean settlement have been found in the area. The church, from the time of the Discovery, has a tower raised in 1650 and a mid-16th-century altarpiece whose central piece is the work of the local artist Francisco Velasco.
Church of la Asunción de Geria
Monument
It keeps a sixteenth-century Renaissance altarpiece on which Luis Aguirre and Jerónimo de Amberes worked. The present tower was raised in 1650 and the ensemble is completed by a hermitage of the Cristo del Humilladero with a cross dated 1694.
The La Loba plateau
Nature
The municipal district climbs from the flat plain of the Pisuerga, to the south, up to the moorland of the Montes Torozos, to the north, where the height of La Loba reaches 844 metres over some 18 square kilometres of surface.
The Arabic name of Geria
Curiosity
The place name is derived from an Arabic word said to mean a place where the waters run, in allusion to the nearby meeting of the Pisuerga and the Duero. In the municipal district there was a Vaccaean settlement between the sixth and first centuries before Christ.
