Charterhouse of Nuestra Señora de Aniago Monument · Villanueva de Duero, Tierra de Medina, Valladolid The Charterhouse of Nuestra Señora de Aniago, in the municipal district of Villanueva de Duero (Valladolid), was founded in 1441, already in the 15th century, under the patronage of Queen Maria of Aragon, wife of John II, on the Aniago estate, then a small village with its own district belonging to Valladolid. The Carthusian monastery stood until its definitive suppression in 1836, following the 19th-century disentailment and the exclaustrations. Today Aniago is a depopulated place given over to the farming activities of its new owners, but it preserves almost intact the wall that surrounded the monastic complex and the settlers' dwellings, as well as ruined remains of the building, beside the river Duero; the surrounding land, which once formed the monks' enclosed estate, is still farmed today.
