What to see and do in Yelo

Yelo
Village
Yelo is a hamlet of 40 inhabitants in the province of Soria, situated about 13 km from Medinaceli, through which the río Bordecorex flows, born in the sinkholes between Miño de Medinaceli and Conquezuela and which ends up pouring its waters into the Duero dozens of kilometres further on. The most characteristic image of the village is its five stone dovecotes, overlooking the cliff of the road coming from Miño de Medinaceli. Its Romanesque church, under the diocese of El Burgo de Osma, has a cross-shaped floor plan, a bell tower at its feet and a simple baroque altarpiece. By the mid-19th century it had 408 residents.
The five dovecotes of the cliff
Curiosity
On the scarp that dominates the road to Miño de Medinaceli five dry-stone dovecotes are lined up, the most recognisable image of the village and an unusual ensemble of Soria vernacular architecture.
The Romanesque church of Yelo
Monument
A church on a cruciform plan with a bell tower and a plain Baroque altarpiece inside; unlike its neighbours of the upper Jalón, the parish always belonged to the diocese of El Burgo de Osma and not to that of Sigüenza.
The hundred houses of Madoz's dictionary
Historical milestone
Madoz described between 1845 and 1850 a village of a hundred houses, with a primary school for thirty-four pupils and a parish dedicated to the Immaculate Conception; some 408 people lived here then, ten times more than today.
The plateaus of the Bordecorex
Nature
At 1,122 metres of altitude, the municipal district is divided between upland pastures and cereal fields watered by the river Bordecorex, which descends towards the Duero among springs scattered across the whole municipality.
The lechazo of the high pastures
Food and drink
The moorland pastures have always sustained flocks of churra sheep, the basis of the roast lamb and of the curds and cheeses that were made in the houses before the milk left the village.
