Sienes
Village
Sienes is a municipality in the northern mountains of Guadalajara, at the foot of the Sierra Ministra, comprising the settlements of Sienes, Tobes and Torrecilla del Ducado. Founded in the 12th century, it was a dependent hamlet of Sigüenza under the bishopric until 1584, when it bought the title of Villa from King Philip II for 1,178,310 maravedís, becoming independent of the episcopal lordship and taking the name Real Villa de Sienes. It forms part of stage 10 of the Route of Don Quixote, in a holm-oak woodland setting home to wild boar and roe deer. It preserves the church of Santa Eulalia de Mérida, a pillory, the Ermita de la Soledad and the stone trough, and celebrates the Fiesta del Mayo and the patron saint festivities on the last weekend of August. It now has 38 inhabitants (INE 2025), compared with the 218 recorded in the mid-19th century.
