What to see and do in Covaleda

Covaleda
Village
Covaleda is a town in the province of Soria (Castilla y León), situated at 1,214 metres above sea level between the sierra de Urbión, to the north, and that of Resomo, to the south, in the Pinares subzone of the province; the Duero river crosses it from northwest to southeast. Its municipal area, with rugged terrain, reaches 2,228 metres at the Urbión peak, on the border with La Rioja, and is dominated by extensive forests of Scots pine along with black pines, beeches and oaks. Its origins go back to the Bronze Age, of which remains survive at the Paso de los Arrieros and the Pozo San Millán. With about 1,560 inhabitants, this timber town preserves the church of San Quirico y Santa Julita, the Santo Domingo bridge and the old “water saws”, sawmills powered by the current.
The Pine Forests of Covaleda
Nature
The 104 square kilometres of the municipal district, between the Sierra de Urbión and that of Resomo, are covered with Scots pine; three protected areas total more than 4,600 hectares within the Natura 2000 Network.
The First Mention of Cobaleda
Historical milestone
The village's name appears for the first time in a donation to the monastery of San Millán dated that year; finds in the municipal district, however, push human occupation back to the Bronze Age.
The 1923 Fire
Historical milestone
A devastating fire destroyed in 1923 ninety-three houses of the village in a few hours; the later rebuilding explains much of the present appearance of the built fabric, raised already in the 20th century.
The Pinariega Lamb Caldereta
Food and drink
It is the village's traditional dish: lamb slowly stewed with onion, pepper and paprika in an iron cauldron, the food of the festivities of San Quirico and Santa Julita in June and of San Lorenzo in August.
