Regumiel de la Sierra
Village
Regumiel de la Sierra is a municipality of 304 inhabitants in the comarca of La Demanda y Pinares, between the sierras of Neila and Urbión, through whose territory the Gumiel river runs and where Lower Cretaceous dinosaurs left their footprints. Since the 15th century its carters enjoyed royal privileges, extended in 1792 to the felling of 2,500 pines for the residents' subsistence. The Covarnantes cave served as a refuge for the guerrilla fighter Cura Merino around 1811, and again during the first Carlist War. Its church of San Adrián, burned by the French that same year, still shows the bullet marks on its bell tower and holds beside it an early medieval necropolis of about a hundred graves, one of the largest in Europe. At the site of La Muela dinosaur footprints are preserved.
