What to see and do in Ciria

Ciria
Village
Ciria is a town of 67 inhabitants in the comarca of Campo de Gómara, in the province of Soria, located in the steep valley of the río Manubles, deep in the Sistema Ibérico, next to the Bigornia pass, crossed by the N-234 road at an altitude of 1,100 metres; the village itself stands at 1,034 metres. It is dominated by a rocky castle built as an Arab fortress in the 9th century and enlarged in the 10th, of which about thirty battlements remain, and its church of Santa María la Mayor is Gothic with Baroque touches. Around the Manantial del Ojo, which supplies the village with water, rock tea grows abundantly, and its mountains of holm oaks, junipers and oaks shelter griffon vulture, roe deer and wild boar.
The Castle of Ciria
Monument
A fortress raised in the ninth century as an Arab stronghold and enlarged in the tenth, built in rubble masonry; it preserves around thirty merlons of its original wall above the valley of the river Manubles.
The Church of Santa María la Mayor
Monument
The parish church of Santa María la Mayor, Gothic in style with Baroque touches attributed to the arrival of some nobleman from north-western Spain, presides over Ciria (Soria), a village that today has sixty-seven inhabitants, compared with the 592 residents recorded in the 1842 census. The area's religious heritage is completed by the hermitages of the Virgen de la Serna, patron saint of the village, and the Virgen del Espino.
The Miracles of the Virgen de la Serna
Curiosity
Nineteenth-century chronicles record the wonders attributed to this image, which came to be investigated by the bishopric of Osma; its festival is held on 21 May and on the Sunday following 15 August.
The Juniper Groves of the Manubles
Nature
51% of the municipal district, some 2,658 hectares, is protected for its juniper woods within the Natura 2000 Network; on its cliffs golden eagles and Egyptian vultures can be seen, which stay here all year.
The Ciria Snail
Curiosity
In 2011 a species of snail until then unknown to science was described from specimens collected in this municipal district, named Corbellaria celtiberica in honour of the comarca.
Cardoon Mushrooms and Goat Cheese
Food and drink
The local larder rests on two products of the woodland and the flock: the king oyster mushrooms that sprout in the grassland after the autumn rains and the goat's cheeses made in the village.
