Torrubia de Soria
Village
Torrubia de Soria is a village of 52 inhabitants located 38 kilometres from the provincial capital, in the comarca of Campo de Gómara, on a high plateau of the Sistema Ibérico. The 1528 census of pecheros, when the village belonged to the old sexmo of Arciel, recorded fifty-six tax-paying families, far more than remain today across its whole municipal area. It was known simply as Torrubia until the 1916 nomenclature reform; throughout the 20th century it absorbed the former municipalities of Tordesalas and Sauquillo de Alcázar. In 2010 the village made national news when its town council approved a request for a temporary nuclear waste storage facility, a decision that caused strong tensions among residents and forced its mayor to resign.
