What to see and do in Sotillo del Rincón

Sotillo del Rincón
Village
Sotillo del Rincón is a municipality of 171 inhabitants in the comarca of El Valle y La Vega Cintora, in the province of Soria, bathed by the río Razón, a tributary of the Duero, in the corner formed by the sierra Cebollera and that of Carcaña; it also includes the settlements of Aldehuela del Rincón, incorporated in 1970, and Molinos de Razón. In 1528 it appeared in the censuses as Sotillo y las Casillas, with 46 taxpayers; after the fall of the Old Regime it was constituted as a municipality under the name El Sotillo, which by the mid-19th century changed to Sotillo del Rincón upon incorporating Molinos de Razón. Its territory, within the Natura 2000 Network, includes practically the whole of the sierras of Urbión and Cebollera, declared a Site of Community Interest and a Special Protection Area for Birds.
The Church of the Natividad de Sotillo
Monument
Raised in whitewashed rubble masonry with the corners in exposed ashlar, it fits into the fabric of white mountain houses; its font is decorated with small round arches on double columns and geometric capitals.
The Hermitage of the Santo Cristo del Humilladero
Monument
A small mountain building of whitewashed walls and ashlar corners whose most evocative element is the porch, presided over by two stone crosses that marked the entrance to the village from the road.
The Village Split by the Razón
Curiosity
The river Razón divides the town centre in two, and it preserves numerous examples of the valley's architecture alongside colonial-looking houses raised by those who made their fortune away and came back to build.
The Mushroom-Foraging Forests of the Razón
Activity
The municipality forms part of the regulated mushroom-harvesting woodlands of Soria, where gathering mushrooms requires a permit and is practiced above all in autumn in the oak and pine woods of the Razón slope.
The Saffron Milk Cap of the Soria Forests
Food and drink
The Lactarius deliciosus gathered in these woodlands is the most prized fungus of the Soria autumn; it is eaten grilled with garlic and parsley or stewed with potatoes, and it sustains fairs and gastronomic events across the comarca.
The incorporation of Aldehuela del Rincón
Historical milestone
The municipality grew in two stages: Molinos de Razón was incorporated in the middle of the 19th century and Aldehuela del Rincón on 1 June 1970. The census of 1528 attributed to it forty-six family units.
Molinos de Razón
Curiosity
The name of this hamlet in the municipality of Sotillo del Rincón recalls the mills once driven by the river Razón, a hydraulic operation that for centuries ground the grain of the whole rincón and of which barely any remains survive today. Already documented in the 1528 Censo de Pecheros, when it comprised 26 family units, it was a municipality in its own right until the mid-19th century, when it was absorbed into Sotillo del Rincón; in 1989 the village's first new house in 500 years was built. It preserves the church of San Vicente Mártir and the hermitage of San José, and celebrates its festivities for San Vicente Mártir on 22 January and for San Antonio on 13 June. Its population, which reached 32 inhabitants in 2000, has fallen to barely 11 in 2025.
The corner between the Cebollera and the Carcaña
Nature
The name of the village describes its location: the angle formed by the Sierra Cebollera and the Sierra de Carcaña, at 1,100 metres. The 6,048 hectares of the municipal district are included in the Natura 2000 Network.
