What to see and do in Aldealpozo

Aldealpozo
Village
Aldealpozo is a hamlet of 18 residents in the district of Frentes, province of Soria, above the valle del río Rituerto; its name comes from a well sixteen metres deep and three wide, already described by Pascual Madoz, and it was formerly called Canales. The Camino de Santiago de Soria passes through it, and between 1941 and 1996 it had its own station on the Soria-Castejón railway line. Its church of San Juan Bautista was built onto a sturdy 10th-century Islamic tower, belonging to the Middle March with its capital at Medinaceli, which overlooked the valle del Rituerto and was in visual contact with those of Castellanos and Masegoso; with rounded corners to hinder catapult attack, it now serves as a bell tower.

Monument
The church of San Juan Bautista incorporates as its bell tower a tenth-century Islamic tower, of some eighteen metres, raised in the time of the Middle March and converted into a Christian tower at the end of the twelfth century or the beginning of the thirteenth.
Black limestones of Aldealpozo
Nature
The municipal district gives its name to a Jurassic geological formation, the black limestones of Aldealpozo, of between 157 and 166 million years, which extends across the Cameros basin and contains abundant fossil ammonites and bivalves.
The sixteen-metre well
Curiosity
The village, formerly called Canales, owes its present name to a well sixteen metres deep by three wide; in the taxpayers' census of 1528 twenty-five contributing families were listed here.
