What to see and do in Rollamienta

Rollamienta
Village
Rollamienta sits at 1,161 metres in the valley of the río Razón, between the sierra Carcaña to the south and that of Cebollera to the north, in the Sorian comarca of El Valle y La Vega Cintora. The river, rich in trout, crayfish and otters, and much of its territory are protected within the sierras of Urbión and Cebollera, declared a site of community interest and a bird protection zone. The village, of about sixty stone houses in an upper and lower quarter, keeps its layout centred on agriculture and livestock farming, with smallholding meadows enclosed by dry-stone walls. At the exit towards the west stands the restored hermitage of the Humilladero. With 49 inhabitants, it also preserves an ashlar fountain next to the old washhouse.
The Church of San Sebastián
Monument
The village's parish church, in which its stone font above all stands out; the church presides over a village of barely a few dozen residents at 1,138 metres of altitude, on the edge of the Razón valley.
The Hermitage of the Humilladero of Rollamienta
Monument
Beside the parish church, this hermitage completes the municipality's religious heritage; wayside shrines marked the start of the roads and the rogation processions halted at them.
The Oak Groves and Holly of Rollamienta
Nature
The 1,868 hectares of the municipal district alternate oak and ash wood with holly, rockrose, thyme, chamomile and gorse, a mid-mountain plant cover that marks the transition towards the pastures of the Cebollera.
The Routes of the Butter Valley
Activity
From the village start waymarked walking and mountain-bike itineraries through the Razón valley, in a comarca-wide programme that combines hiking with visits to the valley's cheese dairies and workshops.
The trout and otters of the Razón
Nature
The river that crosses the valley maintains populations of trout and otter, indicators of clean, cold waters. In the woodland that surrounds it move red deer, roe deer and wild boar among oak and ash groves.
The Rosary procession
Activity
On 8 September the village goes up in procession to the hermitage of the Virgen del Rosario, restored by the residents themselves. It is the second event of the year, after San Sebastián, the patron celebrated on 20 January.
The two stone quarters
Curiosity
The traditional houses are organised in two separate quarters, with rubble masonry houses and Arab tile roofs adapted to the 1,161 metres of altitude and to the long winters of the Razón valley.
The big-game hunting of the valley
Food and drink
Red deer, roe deer and wild boar from these woods are stewed in marinade or in caldereta and complete a larder that for centuries depended on what the woodland and the river gave. Game meat is still a seasonal dish.
