What to see and do in La Póveda de Soria

La Póveda de Soria
Village
La Póveda de Soria is a municipality of 108 inhabitants in the comarca of Almarza, 31 km from the city of Soria, on the banks of the río Tera, a tributary of the Duero, and also encompasses the hamlets of Arguijo and Barriomartín. It is surrounded by the sierras Tabanera, Cebollera, Pineda and Montes Claros, with heights exceeding 1,900 metres. On its territory stood the hamlet of Molinos de Posada Rey, which had between 40 and 100 pecheros in 1354 and already appeared depopulated in the Catastro de Ensenada of 1754; its name later passed to an inn in the village. Popularly known as Póveda, in 1916 the municipality changed its name twice before settling on La Póveda de Soria.

Activity
From 6 to 8 August the municipality's three settlements celebrate San Salvador together, the great festival of a headwater valley that in winter is reduced to a little over a hundred inhabitants.
La Zandaria y las Mozas del Ramo
Curiosity
The traditional calendar preserves the Zandaria of carnival, the Día de la Lastra on 15 May and the Mozas del Ramo during Semana Santa, three rites that survive in an almost empty municipality.
From Póveda to La Póveda de Soria
Historical milestone
That year's revision of the gazetteer changed the village's name, which went from Póveda to Povédola and finally to La Póveda de Soria; its first known documentary mention dates from the year 1491.
Arguijo and Barriomartín
Curiosity
The municipality groups three villages, La Póveda, Arguijo and Barriomartín, lined up at the head of the Tera in a valley reconquered around the year 926 and repopulated with people from the north.
