What to see and do in Candilichera

Candilichera
Village
Candilichera is a municipality in the comarca of Campo de Gómara, in the province of Soria, which brings together alongside the main settlement those of Carazuelo, Duáñez, Fuentetecha and Mazalvete, incorporated between 1842 and 1857. It has 99 inhabitants. In 1965 some scenes of David Lean's film Doctor Zhivago were filmed in the municipality, with artificially snow-covered landscapes and the participation as extras of numerous residents of the village and nearby towns. Its church, dedicated to Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, is Romanesque in origin, though much transformed in the 18th century. The patron saint festivities are celebrated on 15 and 16 August.
The Romanesque Church of Candilichera
Monument
Dedicated to Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, it preserves its Romanesque structure beneath a thorough eighteenth-century transformation; it presides over the largest of the five settlements that make up the municipality.

Curiosity
Some scenes of the film David Lean shot in 1965 were filmed on these flat fields, which stood in for the Russian steppe for the production team installed in the comarca for weeks.
Mazalvete, a Village Apart
Curiosity
One of the municipality's five settlements, Mazalvete, is physically separated from the rest of the municipal district and forms an enclave, an administrative anomaly inherited from the medieval divisions of land.
The Candilichera Plain
Nature
The municipal district is predominantly flat and falls from north to south, from the 1,150 metres of the northwest to the 985 of the southern end, in an open landscape of cereal dotted with holm oaks.
The Festivities of 15 and 16 August
Activity
The municipality's five villages hold their patronal festivities in mid-August, when the ninety-nine registered households are multiplied by the arrival of those who emigrated to Soria and Zaragoza.
