What to see and do in Almenar de Soria

Almenar de Soria
Village
Almenar de Soria is a town of 233 inhabitants in the comarca of Campo de Gómara, 26 km from the capital, which in 1969 incorporated the villages of Cardejón, Castejón del Campo, Esteras de Lubia, Jaray and Peroniel del Campo. Mentioned in the epic poem of the Siete Infantes de Lara, which sets one of its episodes here and which was collected by Ramón Menéndez Pidal, it was known simply as Almenar until 1916. It preserves the castle built between the 15th and 16th centuries, the church of San Pedro Apóstol and the 18th-century hermitage of the Virgen de la Llana. Leonor Izquierdo (1894-1912), wife of the poet Antonio Machado, was born here.
The Castle of Almenar
Monument
The castle of Almenar de Soria dominates the grain-growing region of Campo de Gómara from a hilltop and belonged to the counts of Gómara. Its keep preserves walls dating back to the 10th century; already in the 15th century the rectangular inner enclosure and the battlements of the outer wall were raised, and a century later the towers were altered. At its peak it had two enclosures, with a residential area formed by a gallery and a staircase added later. It was a residence of Charles II and Philip V, inspired the poet Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer for several of his Leyendas, and scenes from the series El Cid were filmed there. It is one of the best-preserved castles in the entire province of Soria.
The House of Leonor Izquierdo
Curiosity
In this village, on 12 June 1894, in the barracks house of the castle of Almenar, Leonor Izquierdo was born, the eldest daughter of Isabel Cuevas and Civil Guard sergeant Ceferino Izquierdo. By 1908 she was already in Soria, at her uncles' boarding house, where she met the teacher Antonio Machado; they married on 30 July 1909 in the church of Santa María la Mayor, she having just turned fifteen and he thirty-four. In 1911, in Paris, she began to show the first symptoms of the tuberculosis that would lead to her death; the couple returned to Soria and rented a house next to the hermitage of Nuestra Señora del Mirón, seeking the mountain air then recommended as a cure. She died on 1 August 1912, at eighteen, leaving in Machado's work the poet's most desolate verses.
Almenar in the Legend of the Seven Infantes
Curiosity
The town's name appears in the epic cycle of the Seven Infantes of Lara, the Castilian legend of betrayal and revenge that unfolds precisely across these frontier lands of the upper Duero.
The Hermitage of the Virgen de la Llana
Monument
Built in the eighteenth century, it shares the municipality's religious heritage with the parish church of San Pedro Apóstol, in a municipal district of almost 106 square kilometres and six population centres.
The Merger of Six Villages
Historical milestone
That day the municipality incorporated Cardejón, Castejón del Campo, Esteras de Lubia, Jaray and Peroniel del Campo; the six settlements today gather 233 inhabitants against the 450 that the town alone had in 1842.
The Rituerto Valley
Nature
The river Rituerto marks the natural limits of the municipal district, which extends between 980 and 1,328 metres of altitude in the heart of the cereal plain separating Soria from the Moncayo.
The Bread of the Gómara Fields
Food and drink
The comarca is one of Soria's great cereal plains: from its wheat came the round loaves baked in each village's wood-fired oven, kneaded once a week for the whole family.
