What to see and do in Gómara

Gómara
Village
Gómara is the service hub of the Campo de Gómara, a Soria comarca that also includes the settlements of Abión, Ledesma de Soria, Paredesroyas and Torralba de Arciel, with 286 inhabitants in total. It was one of the castles that the Muslims established along the río Rituerto and, after the Castilian conquest, it became a county in 1692; it went on to become an archpriesthood with 81 places under its jurisdiction. For centuries it has held a weekly market on Saturdays, a legacy from when it had a casa-mesón, a tavern and an oven owned by the college of minor clergy. It preserves remains of its castle, the church of San Juan Bautista, of Gothic lines, and the hermitage of the Virgen de la Fuente, rebuilt after burning down in 1702.
The Remains of the Castle of Gómara
Monument
Above the river Rituerto are preserved the remains of the fortress that was a Muslim defensive stronghold before the Castilian conquest, on the natural crossing between the Duero valley and the lands of Aragon.
The Church of San Juan Bautista
Monument
The town's parish church, of Gothic character, the main building of a settlement that acts as a comarca head with a medical centre, swimming pools and a rural school serving six villages of the surrounding area.
The Hermitage Saved from the Fire
Monument
Tradition tells that the hermitage of the Virgen de la Fuente burned in 1702 and that the image appeared intact among the ashes; since then devotion to that invocation has not declined in the town.
The County of Gómara
Historical milestone
The county of Gómara is a noble title granted in 1690 by King Charles II, together with the earlier viscountcy of Almenar, to Luis de Salcedo y Arbizu, belonging to the Salcedo and Ríos lineages, families of knights linked to the Twelve Lineages of Soria. In 1692 the town became the seat of the county; half a century later the land register counted forty-three families, which by the mid-19th century had already grown to ninety-two, with 370 inhabitants. The title remains in use today: its current holder, Pedro Francisco de León y Garrido, inherited it in 2006 after his father's death.
The Saturday Market
Activity
The town keeps a weekly market held every Saturday for centuries and that still brings together the residents of the whole Campo de Gómara, in a comarca where hardly any shops are left.
The Portuguese Oak Groves of Gómara-Nájima
Nature
This site of community importance occupies 411 hectares of the municipal district and protects the patches of Portuguese oak that survive among the cereal fields, alongside the steppe bird area of the Altos Campos de Gómara.
The Caldereta and the Festival Bread
Food and drink
The August festivities close with a communal caldereta and the sharing of bread and wine among the residents, while on 2 July the procession of Santa Isabel climbs up to the hermitage of the Virgen de la Fuente.
A Berber Toponym
Curiosity
The town's name has been derived from the Arabic Gumara, in reference to a Berber group settled in the area, although a Visigothic origin has also been proposed for the same place name.
