What to see and do in Santa Cruz de Yanguas

Santa Cruz de Yanguas
Village
Santa Cruz de Yanguas is a Sorian municipality of 56 inhabitants that also includes the settlements of Valdecantos and Villartoso, in the comarca of Tierras Altas, one of the places with the coldest winters in Spain. The settlement, of popular mountain architecture in rough-hewn stone, is carefully restored. In the Valdarcel park, next to the río Baos, there is a rustic Roman bridge and a much-visited dinosaur footprint site, surrounded by ash, poplar and walnut trees; to the northwest stretches a forest of beeches and Scots pines integrated into the Urbión Regional Hunting Reserve. The village lies on the Route of the Ichnites, with three-toed footprints of carnivorous dinosaurs and a giant stegosaurus model.
The bridge over the Baos river
Monument
A rustic bridge of Roman make crosses the Baos beside the village, in a valley of leafy ash groves that was an obligatory passage for the flocks coming down from the sierra towards the winter pastures.
The Forest Museum
Monument
The village keeps a museum devoted to the forest and its history, with a dinosaur replica that links up with the three-toed footprints visited in the municipal district within the Ruta de las Icnitas.
The church of the Holy Trinity
Monument
Described in the nineteenth century as of good fabric, it is dedicated to the Mystery of the Holy Trinity, a dedication rarely found in the rural parishes of this part of the Sistema Ibérico.
Charcoal-burning and the drover's road
Historical milestone
The municipality's economy was sustained by the making of charcoal and by transhumance along the Cañada Real Soriana Oriental, two activities that died out over the course of the twentieth century.
The Urbión Regional Hunting Reserve
Nature
The municipal district forms part of this big-game reserve, with populations of red deer and wild boar that have multiplied as the villages emptied and the hillside crops were abandoned.
