What to see and do in Monterrubio

Monterrubio
Village
Monterrubio is a town in the Campiña Segoviana, in the southwest of the province, whose name means reddish mount, referring to the woods of Pyrenean oak or Portuguese oak (quejigo) that in autumn and winter keep their dry, reddish-coloured leaves; the historian Hernando Colón, son of Cristóbal Colón, already noted around 1515 the existence of these oak woods in Monterrubio. Tradition places its origin with resettlers who came from Monterrubio de la Demanda, in La Rioja, and the place is already recorded as early as 1162. Its territory, protected for hosting black stork and Spanish imperial eagle, is dominated by the Monterrubio massif, a line of four hills known as Las Cabezas. With around 51 inhabitants, it keeps up the tradition of climbing, on the 15th of August, to the rock called El Huevo to watch the sunrise.
