What to see and do in San Cristóbal de la Cuesta

San Cristóbal de la Cuesta
Village
San Cristóbal de la Cuesta is a municipality in the Salamanca comarca of La Armuña, at 829 metres above sea level and a few kilometres from the capital, to which it is linked by a daily bus service; it has about 1,169 inhabitants, a population that has doubled in the last decade owing to its closeness to Salamanca. It was reconquered by the kings of León after the capture of Ledesma and Salamanca in the 10th century, and in 1136 Alfonso VII granted it to the diocese of Salamanca. Its countryside lives from the farming of cereals and pulses, with denomination-of-origin products such as the lentil of La Armuña and the chickpea of Pedrosillo, as well as pig farms.
The donation by Alfonso VII to the bishopric
Historical milestone
Alfonso VII of León granted the town to the bishopric of Salamanca in 1136, in the same donation that included Cantalapiedra, Topas and San Pelayo de Cañedo; the place had been reconquered in the tenth century by Ramiro II.
The church and the Virgen de la Encina
Monument
The sixteenth-century church was altered in 1750 by Agustín de Vargas, author of the doorway, and holds an altarpiece by Juan Sánchez from 1755. The adjoining chapel has housed since the nineteenth century the Virgen de la Encina, after her hermitage collapsed.
